RESEARCH AREA

Analyzing problems and designing algorithms for linear, nonlinear, and integer programs arising in various applications, global optimization methods for nonconvex programming problems, location and transportation theory and applications, economic and energy mathematical modeling and analysis.

  • Principal Investigator on 57 research projects sponsored by several agencies including the National Science Foundation, Naval Surface Warfare Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Department of the Interior, Association of American Railroads, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Highway Administration, U.S. and Virginia Departments of Transportation, and the Federal Aviation Administration.


 

  • Published 257 refereed articles in various journals including Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematical Programming, Mathematics of Operations Research, Operations Research Letters, Transportation Science, INFORMS Journal on Computing, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Optimization, IIE Transactions, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization, Journal of Global Optimization, Naval Research Logistics, Networks, Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Computational Optimization and Applications, Applied Mathematics and Optimization, Optimization Letters, Transportation Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, and IEEE Transactions.


 

  • Published six books:  Disjunctive Programming (Springer Verlag, 1982), Linear Programming and Network Flows (John Wiley & Sons, 1990, 2005), Nonlinear Programming:  Theory and Algorithms (John Wiley & Sons, 1993, 2006), and A Reformulation-Linearization Technique for Solving Discrete and Continuous Nonconvex Problems (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1999). (Also, edited two other books/journal issues.)


 

  • Provided Consulting Services on 31 different projects.


 

  • Presented 240 conference papers (167 invited seminars/lectures, and 73 contributed submissions).


 

  • Directed 38 Ph.D. dissertations and 43 M.S. theses.  (4 Ph.D. and 1 M.S. students in progress.)


 

  • Committee Member for a total of 165 students (89 Ph.D. students and 76 M.S. students).
